"In order to persuade hunters to kill and submit deer and to persuade landowners to permit hunting on their land in the "Disease Eradication zones," the Wisconsin DNR has established a reward program. Hunters who harvest a CWD positive animal receive $200 in addition; the landowner from whose land the animal is harvested will receive $200 from the program. If the animal is harvested on public land, the hunter will receive $200.

The Wisconsin DNR plan to enter all hunters who submitted samplings "into a drawing" for $20 if funds from the $250,000 reward fund remain after payment for the positives. This program is a cooperative effort between the Wisconsin DNR and Whitetails Unlimited. "Whitetails Unlimited" is administering the funds.

I do not know if the Reward System is still in effect in 2005.
In the CWD Zone Areas you can hunt deer from November 19 to January 3, 2006.
Make sure you have plenty of CWD tags!
Check your DEER Hunting Regulations!

The DNR makeas a lot of money on  the "Bonus Deer Tag Sales" because you have to buy them for each specific Deer Management Unit DMU.

ATTEND THE ANNUAL CONSERVATION CONGRESS MEETINGS

The DNR did propose a longer deer gun season starting November 15th and extending 23 days instead of 9 days, however, it failed. I am 100% for it for too many reasons to list here. This would extend the recreational time allotted each year for the deer gun hunters and for many reasons would not overly increase the harvest. Most good hunting areas in the southern portion of WI are posted against hunting deer. It would give the gun hunters more weekends to hunt. Hunting pressure always drops off after the first weekend of the opening of the season, and hunting pressure and weather conditions determine the deer harvest.

We wait all year to gun hunt deer why limit our recreation time to 9 days of buck hunting out of 365 days, that's only about 2% of the year. Twenty-three days is only 6% of the days out of a year, that way we would get a little more hunting time for our license fee tags! Out of state hunters would get more time for their license fee money too. Deer hunting improves Wisconsin's economy. Because of Chronic Wasting Disease  (CWD) we need to harvest more deer! Where land owner permission has been granted, organized sharp shooter hunts on private lands will be held, but we don't et to participate.

Farmers and most land owners need to consider opening up their land to more deer hunters! A high percentage of deer huntable land is posted.  Open your land to deer hunting! Now, the DNR is planning to kill all the deer in the infected areas around Iowa county.

If CWD ever spreads to livestock, --private land owner's will wish they had allowed deer hunting!

We have to figure out ways to open up more of the private farm crop and timber lands to be able to properly harvest the requisite number of whitetail deer to reduce the spread of CWD disease, crop and browse range damages, and reduce highway accidents that threaten too many human lives.

We need longer wide open gun seasons to reduce the deer herd in the CWD management area and in adjacent counties and especially in all DNR public hunting lands. Most of the heavy hunting is only done during good weather on weekends. Therefore, hunting seasons should be extended at least to the end of December and perhaps to the middle or end of January.

The only place most of us have to hunt is on public lands. Extending the deer gun season would provide more time for deer on private posted land areas to move into the DNR hunting areas!

Hunting is a valuable and treasured recreation that ought to be extended as long as possible for the benefit of the hunters and the economy of our state. Most of the deer are harvested when there is heavy hunting pressure, but the recreation and economic benefit is still there with a longer deer gun season!
