First Turkey Hunt for Grandson

First Turkey Hunt for Grandson

It was opening day of the Turkey season this morning. I took my grandson for his first time out hunting. He may be a little young but I am afraid to wait any longer to take him as I do not know how long I will be physically able or around to do it.

He did everything I told him and I heard no complaints.

The Gobbler came in on full strut at 6:00 AM and he got to watch the whole show. The bird weighed 24 pounds had 1¼ inch spurs and a 10 inch beard.

We were hunting not far from home just South of Milan, Illinois.

I had scouted the birds a few days before opening day and watched them with binoculars in a pasture. I waited for them to leave the field and then built a blind under a Cedar tree in the middle of the field.

On opening morning we had a fairly long walk to make through the woods and I instructed my Grandson to stay close to me so he could see the light from my flashlight and not talk. He did real well and did not fall down as I thought he might do at his age.

We were at the blind while still dark and set two decoys out, one to our right and one to our left at 20 yards.

Just a little past the crack of daylight they started to Gobble. I could tell there were at least two Jakes and a Boss Gobbler. I had schooled my Grandson on the drive out on what to do when a bird came.

From my experience I could tell they had not flew down yet and we were laying on our sides down in the blind. At good light we got up to take a look and Tyler spotted the bird coming from a direction we had not heard a Gobble from. The ole boy was sneaking in silently to beat his competition.

We watched him approach in full strut until he got near the decoy when I knew that he would be in good range. It was all over at 6:00 AM. I jumped out of the blind and got ready to shoot again just in case but he was done. I tagged the bird and put him in a Green bag that I had made years ago with a sling to carry him out of the woods.

I always thank my maker after a successful hunt and was glad that we got the bird so soon as I was worried how much patience the boy
might have.
