Credible Public Interest Broadcast Journalism must never be compromised by a Political Balancing Agenda

The only mandate in public broadcasting content is to broadcast in the public interest, convenience, and necessity of the audience served.

Genuine public interest journalism with integrity will have nothing whatever to do with any political party interest' balancing agendas! That is what is wrong with nearly all of the so-called journalism we are exposed to in the United States of America.

The attempt to balance public broadcasting content between Democrats and Republicans "is destroying their mandate to broadcast in the public interest, convenience and necessity." Those political parties have ongoing access to mainstream media with which to mass communicate with the public.

There should be no political distinctions in the content of your programming. Other than that public broadcasting is done in the public interest, convenience and necessity, --there is no political balance requirement issue, nor should there be.

Broadcast journalism should be conducted solely in the public interest with NO regard to any political balancing agenda.

When they talk about political balancing, they only talk about Republican Party and Democratic Party balancing; how ignorant is that kind of biased agenda? What about Progressives and all the other political categories that would also warrant political balancing fairness? That is the best agenda I know of to destroy journalism's public purpose function!

Journalism's most important public purposed function is to criticize any and all government officials and policies that are viewed as not being in the public interest, regardless of political affiliation.

Read: The Canons of Journalism and tell me where it mentions political balancing agendas. That kind of agenda has been, and is destroying journalism!

Why are American journalists allowing the Republicans to get away with this ridiculous threat to the integrity of public interest broadcast journalism?

Government Policy-making and Political Affairs Generate News and Interpretive Commentaries

No matter what political party is in power the public wants and needs the comprehensive facts & realities behind the news that affects their lives and the future for all Americans.

When those hard facts and realities are accurately interpreted to reflect the horrific impact such policies are imparting on our lives we begin to understand the value of unfettered journalism; journalism that must be protected from any and all interfering sources. Authentic BR journalists' must be allowed to broadcast all dimensions of those public affairs realities regardless of how that journalistic effort affects any political party or politician.

The demand for political party balance is ludicrous and is destroying the requirement of legitimate integrity in all forms of public affairs journalism.

What should be the Purpose and Function of all Broadcast Journalism?

Should it be to keep a critical watchful eye and ear on all the political parties and their agendas or should it be to merely balance the viewpoints and agendas of the major political parties, many such agendas which have proven to be extremely detrimental to the public interest.

If you require the balancing of the major political party interests’ you defeat the very purpose and function of broadcast journalism to broadcast in the public interest, need and necessity. Do we want broadcast journalism to be a mere balanced voice of the two major political parties? That will completely obliterate broadcasting in the public interest, need, and necessity.

The major factor here is that major political parties and the Executive Branch of our federal government have tons of main stream media access to counter any reporting by broadcast journalists'.  We need critical journalists’ and critical journalism by all broadcast journalists in respect to all public affairs issues and policy making.

On a separate issue, Republicans’ want to cut Federal funding to the Corporation Public Broadcasting from 400 million to 300 million dollars. Could their motive be because they do not believe the programming content does not favor their political agenda?

The claim is that federal funding is only 15% of the Corporation of Public Broadcasting's budget and that those broadcasting needs could be picked up by other means. This is an entirely different issue from that of the politically balancing of broadcast journalism.

THE POLITICAL ISSUES

Their has also been talk by the Republicans in congress to auction off all of our public owned broadcast frequencies. Do you realize what that would mean? Think about it! Darrell Udelhoven
