A Reply to my Post in news:rec.hunting from Jason Weaver. (on June 28, 2000)I second your sentiments on shooting running deer. I have never done it and most likely never will. I carry a "snort" call when deer hunting and a quick sharp blow on this will bring most running deer to a momentary pause...more like a stutter step, but it's enough to get off the shot accurately.
I have only met one person that was capable of consistently stopping running deer. I tell everyone that I take hunting to never shoot at a running animal...my uncle on the other hand has brought down quite a few full-tilt bucks. He shoots a BAR 300 mag with a Zeiss scope.
The most amazing thing I have ever seen him do was take 2 bucks at 300 yards...both were running in the same direction across the field with about 75 yards between them. I was about a mile away and the shots were so quick, I only heard one long boom. Both cut forward flips and never got up.
To compound things it was pretty dark (not night...just moon less cloudy dusk). I was preparing to climb down when I heard the shots. I don't have the best eyesight in the world and, given the conditions, don't think I could have seen a deer in the field at any range, much less killed a running double.
I never would have believed it, and if it had been anyone else I would have chalked it up to dumb luck. This fellow is the only exception to the rule I have ever met...but then I have seen him strike and then blow out a match with a 10-22 and never touch the stick.
Oh yea...and don't take him dove hunting unless you want to get embarrassed...lol. (Lots of Luck)

That is a good illustration of what developing exceptional "shooting running game" skills can accomplish. But you need to develop those "shooting running game with a rifle" skills along with the requisite safety skill habits before you try those running game shots in the field!
